Be Happy, Do Your Best, Be Good and Kind

I recently went to the international art show, art festival and art educational event, Art Basel Miami Beach a sister event started in 2001 from the original one started in 1970 in Basel, Switzerland. This year they celebrated 10 years in Miami Beach, which I remember well having launched the event while I worked in Broadcast Radio at the time at the premier Classical station WTMI-FM.

I was blown away by the international, young crowd of attendees, artists, art enthusiasts who gathered to see some of the best, most innovative and inspiring art being created today. Galleries from literally all over the globe were there including, England, France, Germany, Spain, South and Central America, Asia, Africa and of course the US and especially New York City.

This was a brand and branding phenomena. Artists, galleries, art professionals, media all creating the most visually spectacular presentations to engage, entice and yes shock people, all in a good and memorable way. People walking around as art themselves. Fabtastic!

The night before, I was out with my 18 year old cousin Dylan, who is a music major on scholarship at my alma mater FAU in Boca Ration and we talked about an assignment he had to define what is music? It got me thinking about what is art?

By definition music is “sounds that are pleasant, harmonized” and art is “the quality, production, expression, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.”

What really struck me though was how I would answer the questions about what art and music are. Coming from a creative, music and arts background it’s  really about the emotions and feelings they evoke and how they make me think. We know that a piece of art or a song can bring us to tears of great joy or deep sadness and can change how we feel at any moment. It does for me.

Be Happy

Do The Best You Can

Be Good and Kind

How much simpler can it get for creating a philosophy for life? Art and music are powerful mediums that evoke deep feelings that get us thinking about our perceptions and values.  They brand themselves in the most natural way just by living in their creative form.

We can learn a lot about personal branding from art and music.
