Nissan recently unveiled its latest offering, the all-electric coupe crossover Nissan Ariya, in Barcelona. The Ariya successfully fuses traditional Japanese design principles with modern innovations, adding a potent dimension to Nissan’s venture into electric vehicles. Equipped with autonomous driving capabilities and a full-charge range of approximately 300 miles, the Ariya stands as a testimony of Nissan’s commitment to zero-emission mobility and sustainable living.
Nissan Design Europe has interwoven the intricacies of minimalist and complex traditional Japanese design, resulting in vehicles characterized by aesthetic elegance and futuristic features. Elements of traditional Japanese philosophies like Ikebana, Origami, and the concept of ‘Ma’ pepper the vehicle designs, painting a vivid picture of Japan’s artistic spirit on a global podium.
Appreciation springs instantly for the beauty of fusing tradition with modernity. This intricate blend sings the praises of Japanese dedication to producing art that is both practical and beautiful.
Nissan Ariya: Blend of tradition and modernity
The Ariya also brings about a deviation from conventional Nissan designs and seeks to create an environment that is serene and energizing, eliminating stress while enhancing the joy of driving.
The birth of Ariya saw a collaborative effort, with a diverse team contributing from the Nissan Global Design Centre. Collectively, they envisioned Ariya to be an innovation reflecting their shared expertise and vision. Lesley Busby, Nissan’s colour manager, added that their design philosophy is geared towards future-proofing and meeting future consumer needs. This involves creating a homelike environment inside the car and the implementation of AI-driven technology.
Inspired by the precise craftsmanship of traditional Japanese artisans, the designers embarked on a journey to Japan to immerse themselves in its rich culture. Their key learnings from the trip were then translated into innovative computer designs for the Ariya.
Automotive designer Alessandro Messale revealed the initial design process took roughly three to four months. Following design completion, the team worked hand-in-hand with engineers for refinement and improvements, guaranteeing a seamless driving experience in the Nissan Ariya.
