On May 6, 2024, the Student Art Exhibition took place at the NewAlliance Foundation Art Gallery, hosted by Gateway Community College. The artworks displayed varied greatly in their forms, from sculptures and collages to photographs and unique product designs, attracting a large crowd of art enthusiasts, potential recruiters, and proud families and friends.
The platform granted students the opportunity to present their creations to a wider audience, encouraging their interaction with the attendees and their appreciation of the feedback received. The diversity of ideas and the sheer talent of the upcoming artists displayed were well-received and highly admired by the spectators.
Gateway Community College’s role in fostering creativity and promoting arts was reinforced through the exhibition, encouraging continued growth in arts and creative ventures within the institutional environment and the local community.
Taina Jackson’s exhibits stood out among others, demonstrating her keen sense of creativity and innovation. Jackson ingeniously showcased contrasting themes through her artwork of two opposing model houses and cheesed the critics by her innovative conversion of everyday items into figurines.

Furthermore, her vibrant combination of colors and her keen interest in utilizing recycled materials to create a sculpture series added to her appeal in the contemporary art world.
Another highlight was Arwen LaPlant’s sensory-engaging cityscape painting. LaPlant’s nuanced use of color and texture drew an immersive experience, making viewers feel the vibrancy and dynamism of city life. Her poignant depiction vividly portrayed the chaos yet uniformity city life offers.
Gateway’s partnership with a local maker’s workshop also added value to the exhibition, providing students with access to specialized tools for experimenting and creating their artwork. A grant from the Community Foundation of Greater New Haven further infused energy into Connecticut State’s art community, providing annual memberships to 15 students, removing barriers to access, and promoting artistic growth in the state.
The Student Art Exhibition, curated by Noé Jimenez, stays open until May 13, 2024, and offers a glimpse into the students’ commitment, creativity, and adaptability. Visitors get an immersive experience in art, reflecting individual determination, imaginative skills, and adaptability in the pieces selected by Noé Jimenez.
