Academy Award-winning actress Nicole Kidman is embracing her sexuality through her new role in the erotic thriller “Babygirl.” At 57, Kidman finds it empowering to be portrayed as a “sexual being” in a industry where women of a certain age are often overlooked. In the film, she plays Romy, a powerful CEO and mother who engages in an intense affair with her younger intern.
The “Moulin Rouge!” star opened up about her role in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Kidman stressed the beauty in being recognized as a sexual being at her age, a phase where women are often dismissed in that context. She expressed appreciation for the fresh perspective her character, Romy, gives to audiences.
“This is a voice I haven’t seen, this is a place that I haven’t been, I don’t think audiences have been,” she said. Romy is a woman who seems to have it all: power, family, and yet grapples with understanding her own identity and desires.

Kidman hopes “Babygirl” will be a liberating film for many women who can relate to Romy’s situation. Despite some feedback describing it as one of the most disturbing films they’ve seen, Kidman remains optimistic about the movie’s impact. “I hope it is,” she said.
She was particularly struck by the raw and dangerous sexuality in the film that wasn’t written for a young actress but instead targeted a mature audience. This made the movie even more compelling to her.
One aspect of the film that Kidman found worth exploring was acting out different types of orgasms. While she found it slightly embarrassing, she believed it was essential to her character’s portrayal.
Working closely with her female director, Halina Reijn, Kidman contrasted the “Hollywood orgasms” with real ones which are quite different in appearance and sound. She believes such films are necessary as they allow people to feel liberated and true to themselves.
Despite her busy schedule with six projects lined up for 2024 including Netflix’s “The Perfect Couple” and the Paramount+ series “Lioness”, Kidman emphasizes the importance of balancing her professional commitments with personal life. The Australian actress says she still has several aspirations she wants to fulfill that go beyond her acting career.
“I might do a play. I would like to hike Machu Picchu. I want to go skiing” she shared. These personal interests are part of her life, as much as her career and family are.
“Babygirl” is set to open in theaters on December 25.
