8 subtle behaviors of an unfaithful man, according to a relationship expert

Navigating relationships can be tricky, particularly when it comes to matters of trust.

As a relationship expert and founder of the Love Connection blog, I’ve been asked on numerous occasions about the telltale signs of an unfaithful partner.

The truth is, infidelity isn’t always as obvious as we might believe.

It often comes down to subtle shifts in behavior that can easily be brushed off or overlooked.

I’ve gathered my insights over the years to share with you these eight subtle behaviors of an unfaithful man.

This isn’t about accusing or blaming, but rather offering a guide to discern if something might be awry in your relationship.

Remember, understanding these signs isn’t about becoming a detective – it’s about empowerment and fostering open communication in your relationships.

Let’s dive in!

1) Sudden change in routine

We all have our daily routines, and while change is a part of life, a sudden and unexplained shift in a man’s routine can be a subtle sign of infidelity.

This isn’t about an occasional late night at work or a new hobby that consumes his time.

I’m talking about consistent, unexplained changes that don’t seem to add up.

Maybe he’s suddenly working late every night, or there’s a new gym routine that doesn’t quite fit his previous interests.

It’s essential to understand that changes in routine aren’t inherently bad.

They can often signal growth or personal development. But when these changes happen suddenly, without explanation or discussion, it can be cause for concern.

The key here isn’t to jump to conclusions but rather to open up a conversation about these changes.

Ask questions and listen to his responses. The goal is understanding, not accusation.

2) Overprotective of personal devices

In this digital age, our devices often hold the keys to our private lives.

As a relationship expert, I’ve noticed that one sign of possible infidelity is a sudden overprotectiveness of personal devices.

Let me tell you a quick story here. I once had a client who noticed that her partner, who used to leave his phone around the house, suddenly started taking it everywhere – even to the bathroom.

It was a sudden and significant shift that raised her suspicion.

Now, it’s important to remember the words of the great Maya Angelou, “You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.”

If you notice this behavior in your partner, it’s essential not to let it consume you.

Instead, use it as an opportunity to have an open discussion about trust and boundaries in your relationship.

Everyone deserves privacy and respect. A change in behavior doesn’t automatically mean infidelity, but it’s worth addressing if it causes concern.

3) Lack of emotional intimacy

A vital part of any relationship is emotional intimacy – that deep connection that goes beyond the physical.

When a man starts to stray, one of the first things to go can often be this emotional bond.

I remember a time early in my career when I was working with a couple who seemed perfect on the surface.

They had a beautiful home, successful careers, and two wonderful children.

The wife confided in me that she felt emotionally distant from her husband – like he was there, but not really present.

It was a subtle shift that eventually led to the discovery of an affair.

In my book Breaking The Attachment: How To Overcome Codependency in Your Relationship, I talk about the importance of emotional intimacy and how to cultivate it in your relationship.

It’s not always easy, but it’s worth the effort.

If you’re feeling like your man is emotionally distant, it may be worth exploring.

Remember – communication is key. Don’t jump to conclusions, but instead, use this as an opportunity to dig deeper and strengthen your bond.

4) Increased attention and gifts

Now, this may seem counterintuitive. After all, isn’t more attention and gifts a good thing in a relationship? Well, not always.

Sometimes, when a man is unfaithful, he may overcompensate by showering his partner with unexpected gifts or increased attention.

This could be his way of assuaging guilt or trying to distract from his behavior.

A client once shared with me how her husband, who rarely gave her gifts, suddenly started bringing home surprise presents.

At first, she was thrilled but soon started to wonder why the sudden change in behavior. It later emerged he was compensating for an affair.

Again, it’s essential not to jump to conclusions. Increased attention or gifts can also be a sign of renewed commitment or love.

But if it’s out of character and unexplained, it may be worth having a conversation about it. Communication is always the best approach.

5) Avoids eye contact

Eye contact has always been a powerful tool of communication. It’s a window into someone’s emotions and truth.

Over the years, I’ve noticed that men who are unfaithful often struggle to maintain eye contact with their partners.

I recall a couple I worked with where the man seemed unable to look his partner in the eyes during our sessions. It was as if he was avoiding a silent confession.

Eventually, his infidelity came to light, and this behavior made sense in retrospect.

Now, it’s important not to overanalyze every glance or lack thereof.

Everyone has moments when they struggle with eye contact, especially during difficult conversations.

But if you notice a consistent pattern of avoidance, it might be worth addressing.

Honesty and openness are the foundation of any strong relationship. If something doesn’t feel right, it’s okay to trust your intuition and bring it up in conversation.

6) Disinterest in sex

Let’s be real here, relationships are often as much about physical intimacy as they are about emotional connection.

A sudden drop in sexual interest can sometimes signal infidelity.

It’s a touchy subject, and it’s important to approach it with sensitivity. Many factors can affect a person’s libido – stress, health issues, or even relationship troubles.

But when a man who was once passionate and interested becomes disinterested without explanation, it might be an indication of infidelity.

I’ve seen it happen in my practice – couples who once couldn’t keep their hands off each other suddenly drifting apart in the bedroom.

And sometimes, the root cause was an affair.

As always, communication is key. If you notice a decline in your sexual relationship, bring it up gently and honestly.

It’s not about accusation but understanding. We’re all human, after all.

7) Defensive behavior

Defensiveness can often be a mask for guilt. A man who is unfaithful might become overly defensive when questioned about his actions or whereabouts.

I remember a session with a couple where the man would become instantly defensive when his partner asked simple questions about his day.

This shift in behavior was out of character for him and raised her suspicions. As it happened, he was trying to hide an affair.

As Samuel Johnson once said, “Guilt once harbored in the conscious breast, intimidates the brave, degrades the great.”

Guilt can make us act in ways that are out of character.

If you notice defensiveness in your partner, it’s essential to approach the situation with understanding and patience.

It’s not about confrontation but about open and honest communication.

It’s okay to express your concerns and seek clarity.

8) Absence of future planning

In a healthy relationship, it’s natural to talk about and plan for the future, whether it’s next week’s dinner date or next year’s vacation.

When a man starts avoiding these conversations or becomes vague about future plans, it might be a sign of infidelity.

This isn’t an easy pill to swallow. I’ve seen couples in my practice where the man suddenly became evasive about future commitments, leaving his partner feeling insecure and confused.

In some of these cases, the avoidance was linked to an affair.

Again, it’s important to remember that this isn’t always a definitive sign of infidelity. There can be other reasons for someone avoiding future planning.

But if you notice this behavior coupled with other signs on this list, it’s worth having an open and honest conversation.

Remember, your feelings are valid. It’s okay to ask for reassurance and clarity in your relationship.

After all, honesty is the cornerstone of any meaningful connection.

Conclusion

Navigating the complexities of relationships is never easy, and suspecting infidelity can be an emotionally draining experience.

However, I hope these subtle signs can guide you in understanding your situation better.

Remember, every relationship is unique, and these signs are not definitive proof of unfaithfulness. Communication and honesty should always be your first approach.

If you’re struggling with issues of trust or codependency in your relationship, you might find my book, Breaking The Attachment: How To Overcome Codependency in Your Relationship, beneficial.
