8 wake-up calls we often receive a little too late in life (a toolkit for life)

Life has a funny way of teaching us lessons—often at the exact moment we need them, but sometimes long after we wish we’d known better. We’ve all had those moments of clarity where we think, If only I’d realized this sooner.

These wake-up calls can be tough, but they’re also powerful reminders of what truly matters and where we might need to make a change.

The good news? It’s never too late to adjust course. Each wake-up call is an opportunity to grow, evolve, and live more intentionally.

Consider this a toolkit for life—eight common wake-up calls and the lessons they hold, designed to help you avoid regret and focus on what really counts.

1) Living for others

Life has a funny way of making us prioritize others over ourselves. It’s easy to get caught up in trying to please everyone around us.

This can manifest in various ways – pursuing a career because it’s what our parents wanted, or staying in a relationship that isn’t fulfilling because we’re scared of being alone.

The wake-up call comes when we realize that we’ve been living for others and not ourselves. And often, this realization hits us too late, when we’ve already made too many compromises and sacrifices.

The truth is, it’s your life, and you should be making choices that make you happy first and foremost. It’s crucial to learn to prioritize your own needs and desires.

Remember, it’s never too late to start living for yourself.

2) Ignoring self-care

In the hustle and bustle of life, it’s so easy to forget about self-care. I learned this the hard way.

A few years back, I was juggling a demanding job, a growing family, and an active social life. It was all go, go, go. I was so focused on keeping every ball in the air that I forgot one crucial thing — myself.

I ended up burning out. It was a wake-up call that came a little too late.

By the time I realized I needed to slow down and take care of myself, I’d already pushed my mind and body too far.

So here’s a key lesson: don’t wait until you’re burnt out to start taking care of yourself. It’s important to take time out for self-care, however busy life gets. Start now, not later.

3) Not saving for the future

One of the most common wake-up calls we get too late in life is realizing we didn’t save enough for the future.

It’s easy to prioritize the present—there’s always something to spend on, whether it’s treating yourself, covering unexpected expenses, or simply getting by.

But as the years go by, the absence of a financial safety net can become a heavy burden, leading to stress, regret, and missed opportunities.

The truth is, even small steps can make a big difference over time. Setting aside even a little each month—whether it’s in a savings account, retirement fund, or investments—can create security and freedom down the road.

Saving isn’t just about money; it’s about peace of mind and having the ability to enjoy life on your terms.

If this wake-up call resonates, there’s no better time to start planning for the future than right now.

4) Letting ego control your life

In our pursuit of success and recognition, we often let our egos take the driver’s seat. We start defining our worth by our achievements, creating a cycle where our happiness is dependent on external validation.

This is contrary to one of the fundamental teachings of Buddhism: that ego is an illusion. It creates a false sense of self that separates us from others and the world around us.

Halfway through writing my book, Hidden Secrets of Buddhism: How To Live With Maximum Impact and Minimum Ego, I realized just how much ego had been running my life. And how liberating it was to let go of it.

The ego wake-up call usually comes when we realize that despite all our achievements, we still aren’t satisfied or happy. The solution lies in understanding the transient nature of ego, as explained in Buddhist teachings.

So if you want to learn more about how to live with maximum impact and minimum ego, I’d highly recommend giving my book a read. You might just find the peace and satisfaction you’ve been looking for.

5) Neglecting relationships

In my pursuit of career success and financial security, there was a time I found myself putting relationships on the back burner. The late nights at the office, the weekends spent working, all added up to less time spent with loved ones.

Before I knew it, years had passed and those close relationships had started to drift. The wake-up call was a stark one, a realization that struck deep – the most valuable things in life aren’t things, they’re people.

No amount of success or money can replace the joy and fulfillment that comes from nurturing relationships. It’s important to make time for the people who matter most.

As psychotherapist Esther Perel says, “The quality of your life ultimately depends on the quality of your relationships.”

6) Seeking perfection

We live in a world that often tells us we need to be perfect. Whether it’s the perfect job, the perfect body, or the perfect lifestyle, we’re constantly bombarded with messages about what we should aspire to.

But here’s the wake-up call: perfection is an illusion. It’s a never-ending pursuit that leads to dissatisfaction and burnout.

Ironically, it’s through embracing our imperfections that we find true happiness and fulfillment. It allows us to be authentic and true to ourselves.

So let go of the pursuit of perfection, and start celebrating your perfectly imperfect self.

7) Ignoring your passion

Many of us get so caught up in the daily grind that we forget to follow our passions. We may even convince ourselves that hobbies and passions are luxuries we can’t afford in our busy lives.

However, ignoring what makes our heart sing is a wake-up call waiting to happen. Passion brings joy, fulfillment, and a sense of purpose to our lives.

So whether it’s painting, writing, hiking, or any other passion that you’ve put on the back burner, it’s time to reignite that spark.

Remember, life is not just about surviving, but also about thriving, and following your passion is a big part of that.

8) Postponing happiness

Here’s the biggest wake-up call: Happiness is not a future state to be achieved, it’s a present state to be experienced.

Many of us wait for the perfect conditions to be happy – the right job, the right partner, the right financial situation.

But the truth is, these are external factors that are temporary and unpredictable.

True happiness comes from within, and it’s something we can choose to experience right now, regardless of our circumstances.

So stop waiting, and start living – and enjoying – the present moment.

Final thought: It’s all about mindfulness

At the heart of these wake-up calls is a common thread: mindfulness. It’s about being present, being aware of our choices, actions, and their implications.

In my book, Hidden Secrets of Buddhism: How To Live With Maximum Impact and Minimum Ego, I delve deeper into how mindfulness can change our lives for the better.

From looking after our physical and mental health, nurturing relationships, to aligning with our passions and letting go of ego – it all comes down to being mindful.

And it’s this mindfulness that can help us recognize these wake-up calls earlier in life, rather than too late.

So as you navigate your life’s journey, remember to stay present, stay aware, and stay mindful. After all, life isn’t just about reaching the destination; it’s also about cherishing the journey.
