Martin Azambuja, a prominent figure in the New York graphic design scene, is widely acclaimed for his creative work that blends South American heritage with modern art. As a senior designer at Porto Rocha, he leverages his industry experiences, acquired from his tenure with Micheal Bierut’s team at Pentagram, to inspire upcoming designers.
In addition to his successful career, Azambuja co-founded a publishing venture that aims to preserve the illustrative heritage of Uruguay. His recent work, a print in the “Unfolding” series of accordion prints, showcases a fusion of traditional and modern artistry. He continues to enhance the cultural identity of Uruguay through these meticulously crafted prints.
Launched in 2018 by Francisco Roca and Leandro Castelao, the “Unfolding” series captures the artists’ graphic essence and offers a delightful surprise for art lovers.
Preservation and innovation in Uruguay’s art
The series comprises a diverse array of artwork that takes on a unique persona when unfolded, symbolizing the unveiling of new perspectives or ideas.
Each piece is a complex manifestation of the artists’ passion; a hidden gem that’s revealed after the initial unwrapping. These silk-printed prints offer versatility in display and can enliven any space with their multicolored ink sides. Whether stored in a library or framed, their adaptability makes them easy to fit into various settings.
The publishing venture is set to release several more projects, including a book on Buenos Aires bookstore labels and a study of local culinary traditions. The team’s innovative approaches and international collaboration anticipate a dynamic array of high-quality publications.
Steven Heller, a long-standing co-chair of the SVA MFA Designer as Entrepreneur program and an accomplished author, has contributed substantially to the design and art world. His work, including a memoir and a compilation of design essays, reflects his authority in the field.
