Embrace Collaboration for Off-Page SEO

One effective strategy for marketing yourself as a freelancer is to embrace collaboration for off-page SEO performance. Cutting through the noise on social media alone can be challenging, but teaming up with others can measurably amplify your reach. My company tagline is “We all rise with a creative tide,” which embodies my belief that we are stronger together. By collaborating, you strategically tap into existing audiences with brand trust and integrate networking into your daily marketing efforts. This approach not only boosts awareness but also builds meaningful professional relationships.

Go Live on Social Media

As freelancers, we’re always looking for new strategies to stand out in the marketplace. One strategy that is underutilized is going live on social media. Here are the top 5 reasons why going live can transform your business:

  1. Instant Connection – Going live allows you to engage with your audience in real-time. This immediate interaction helps your audience feel seen, heard, and valued, creating a deep sense of connection and trust. Unlike cold emails, the personal touch you provide during a live session can bypass these barriers, turning viewers into leads.
  2. Establish Authority – Going live is a powerful way to showcase your expertise and establish yourself as a leader in your industry. You can share valuable content, perform trainings, conduct workshops, and demonstrate your products or services. This live interaction allows your audience to see your knowledge and skills in action, reinforcing your credibility and authority.
  3. Shorten the Customer Buy Cycle – The traditional customer buy cycle can be long, but going live can shorten the cycle. When your audience engages with you during a live, they start to know, like, and trust you faster. This accelerated relationship-building process can lead to quicker decisions to work with you.
  4. Stand Out From the Competition – If you check your social media feeds, you’ll likely find that very few of your competitors are going live. This presents a unique opportunity for you to differentiate yourself and capture the attention of your audience. Going live demonstrates that you are confident and willing to take risks. This willingness to be vulnerable can set you apart from others in your industry and make you more memorable to potential clients.
  5. Nurture Existing Relationships – The algorithm on social media favors live videos, meaning your live sessions are more likely to be shown to both new and existing followers. During a live session, you can share new insights and address any questions your followers may have. This engagement helps create a strong bond with your audience, ensuring they remain invested in your brand.

By incorporating live sessions into your marketing strategy, you can see an immediate boost in your income, impact, and influence. Remember, the world needs your unique gifts and talents—don’t be afraid to go live and make a difference.

Seek Continuous Assignments

Consistency is a vital element of freelancing. Significant gaps between projects can raise concerns among potential clients about your reliability and work quality. To maintain a steady stream of opportunities, it’s essential to continuously seek new assignments, even if they are not perfectly aligned with your long-term goals. This proactive approach not only keeps you engaged, but also establishes you as a dependable professional, capable of handling different tasks. Through balancing immediate work with strategic career planning, you can enhance your reputation as a reliable and committed freelancer.

Leverage Storytelling in Marketing

Having built a successful career as a travel blogger, one strategy that I’ve found instrumental in marketing myself as a freelancer is leveraging storytelling. Every trip I embark on, every culture I immerse in, transcends beyond an experience—it’s a story resonating with potential clients. For instance, living in over 70 countries not only made me an adept traveler but honed my skills in diverse work environments. These experiences became the substance of my narrative, making my brand relatable.

Also, by sharing my personal journey of transforming my passion into a popular website with a monthly footfall of over 400,000 visitors, I exhibit my dedication, lending credibility to my expertise. Remember, people connect with authenticity, and a well-told, authentic story can be a powerful marketing strategy.

Utilize Social Proof

I don’t care how good you are or how valuable you could be to somebody; if you are the one trying to sell me on yourself, it’s a hard sell. What makes all the difference in the world is having social proof. Let others speak for you. Let them share how amazing and valuable you are. This can happen in the form of word-of-mouth, the number of followers you have, being syndicated in publications, as well as writing for publications to establish yourself as an authority.

Showcase Your Portfolio

One strategy that worked for me in marketing myself as a freelancer is showcasing my portfolio through a personal website. Early in my career, I created a simple website highlighting my best projects across various industries. This not only gave potential clients a clear view of my skills but also demonstrated my ability to create professional digital content.

For example, after a client saw a detailed case study on a successful marketing campaign I led, they reached out for a similar project. By keeping my portfolio updated and relevant, I attracted more clients and established credibility in my field. Having a strong, visual portfolio is essential for standing out in the freelancing world.

Define and Share Your Authentic Voice

Becoming a successful freelancer begins with knowing and defining yourself. In a world where authenticity is increasingly questionable and AI is making us wonder what’s real and what isn’t, choosing how to portray yourself is key.

Who are you? What drives you? Where have you been, and where are you going? What makes you unique? What values do you hold dear, and what value would you bring to the table? Will your message resonate with everyone? No, and that’s probably a good thing.

You’ll find that working with people who can relate to your origin story, the same values, and the same aspirations you hold will be the kind of clients you’ll enjoy helping the most. Your voice has to be authentic and your own. Go find it and share it with the world.

Add Referral Invitation to Email Signature

My business receives a large amount of referrals. A key thing I implemented that boosted my referrals and made it easy to get more clients is to add an invitation to refer me to my email signature. It lets people know that I am accepting new clients and that they can help other people they know.

Specialize in Your Niche

As a freelancer in digital marketing with over 12 years of experience, I found leveraging my own niche—Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising, and SEO copywriting—in marketing my services tremendously effective.

In a competitive freelance climate, specializing and becoming an expert in certain areas, rather than trying to master everything, can make a significant difference. This strategy, coupled with actively engaging in platform-specific networking and skill-marketing on sites like LinkedIn, has helped me connect with potential clients who seek my specialized skills.

Applying these tactics, I co-founded a tour company, utilizing my knack for SEO and PPC to spread the word digitally. I constantly leverage these skills to not just market my services but also provide a tangible application of my expertise.

Another game-changer was content creation and sharing insights through my blog, positioning myself as an authority in my field, while illustrating my ability to identify and utilize market opportunities, and flipping them for profits on platforms like Flippa.

Each of these strategies has proved pivotal in my freelance digital marketing journey.

Engage on High-Traffic Q&A Platforms

When it comes to standing out in the crowd, I focus on websites like Quora, Discord, Reddit, LinkedIn, and other Q&A digital marketing platforms where we can share our thoughts and help each other. This helps me build my brand’s “E-E-A-T” score, which stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. This drives confidence among the audience that they are listening to a person who knows the field.

I have driven a good number of clients from these sources. Through this medium, you will also get a chance to generate revenue, case studies, and reviews. In freelance digital marketing, without personal branding, you can’t survive. My suggestion would be to find high-traffic forums and help and share your digital marketing tactics. Let the world know you and your work, but don’t spam.

Prioritize Networking and Reputation

Network, network, network. Nothing is as valuable as the reputation you built and the experience you collected along the way. Keeping in touch with everyone you worked alongside will generate the highest rate of return. Much like any marketing plan, word-of-mouth is the highest-margin line item and the most difficult to scale.

Create an Automated Marketing System

To successfully market yourself as a freelancer, create an automated system that attracts clients while you focus on delivering exceptional work. I like to call this your “Marketing Machine.”

Start by building a compelling landing page for your funnel—whether it’s a challenge, webinar, SLO, VSL, or lead magnet—that showcases your expertise and provides real value to potential clients.

Drive traffic to your funnel using strategically targeted, low-cost ads, then nurture prospects who opt in or buy through tailored email sequences that build trust and demonstrate your capabilities.

Then, implement smart retargeting to keep your services top-of-mind for interested leads.

This approach allows your marketing to work 24/7, steadily filling your pipeline even when you’re knee-deep in client projects. By investing time upfront in this system, you’ll avoid becoming the bottleneck in your own business growth and sidestep the burnout that comes from constantly juggling client work and self-promotion. Ultimately, this strategy enables your freelance business to scale without requiring you to hustle for new clients all the time.

Demonstrate Your Expertise Works

I’ve been freelancing as a digital marketing consultant for over 12 years, and my last lead said she found me through Google. I responded, “That means that what I do works!”

Search engine optimization (SEO) begins with a well-optimized website and continues by blogging at least once a week. It increases the chance that you’ll come up in Google when someone is searching for what you have to offer.

If you don’t blog regularly, Google will think your website is stagnant. It looks for fresh, relevant, helpful content written for the human reader in natural language—in other words, not written solely by AI. So, write for your target audience but with the search engine in mind.

Furthermore, blogging regularly on your website not only tells Google that you have the E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authority and Trustworthiness) that they look for, but it shows potential clients that you know what you’re talking about. You want to brand yourself as an expert in your field.

Then reshare each blog post on LinkedIn, but put a link at the bottom to the original article on your website to keep that SEO authority. By the way, make sure that your personal LinkedIn profile is up to date with samples of your work. You should also have a well-branded business profile page on LinkedIn on which you can share your blog posts and other related industry content.

The more you blog and share, the more visitors—potential clients—will come to your website. The more visitors, the more conversions into leads. The more leads, the more sales!
