The Student Art Exhibition, hosted by the Gateway Community College, sheds light on the artwork and creativity of its visual arts and graphic design students. The Exhibition is not limited to any particular medium, housing everything from painting to photography, sculptures to collages, product designs and posters.
Open until May 13th, this event offers more than a showcase of talent – it’s a platform that enables students to gain exposure, receive feedback, and connect with other artists. It’s worth noting that this enriching experience is open to everyone, with free admission!
This exhibition isn’t just about showcasing – it’s also about competition. Artwork will be judged by a panel of esteemed artists and professors from the faculty, with awards being offered on the final day for the best pieces. So don’t forget to mark your calendar and support these aspiring artists!
Among the many amazing pieces featured, one that stands out is Taina Jackson’s sculpture work. It tests the boundaries of opposites by creating two entirely different houses – one simple and minimalist, the other eccentric and detailed.
Showcasing student talent at Gateway exhibition
She invites viewers to examine and challenge their own understanding through her work.
Jackson’s journey goes even further. She collects debris over time, transforming each piece into a miniature figure, each symbolising a different memory. She brings her past to life through these figures, inviting viewers into her world.
Other notable works include Arwen LaPlant’s unique representation of urban life, Theresa Bove’s sculptures made from discarded industrial materials, and Yena Choi’s thought-provoking sketches. Each work featured in the exhibition is a testament to these students’ talent and unique perspectives.
Gateway College’s partnership with Chapel Street maker space has allowed students to access a range of tools and work alongside skilled professionals. This collaboration has enriched their learning experience, extended their creative scope, and fostered a sense of community amongst the students.
Thanks to a grant from the Community Foundation of Greater New Haven, students have the resources they need to complete their projects, receive training, and operate a wide array of technological tools. This empowers them to explore their creativity without any limitations. As the exhibition continues, expect to see diversified displays of talent and creativity from new artists.
