Korean illustrator Gwang Gwang gains international acclaim

Gwang Gwang, an internationally acclaimed Korean illustrator, has garnered attention for his unique depictions of Korean themes. His modern interpretation of Michelangelo’s “David” has particularly drawn attention across various social media platforms.

Gaining recognition for seamlessly blending traditional Korean aesthetics with modern elements, Gwang Gwang’s artwork has been appreciated by art lovers worldwide. The illustrator recently revealed that his artwork is heavily influenced by Korean culture.

Gwang Gwang: Blending Korean tradition with modern art

Traditional elements like the mask, tiger, and Hanbok form an essential part of his work, signifying his intention to embed Korean imagery in his creations. With a keen interest in exploring traditional Korean pottery and calligraphy, Gwang Gwang seeks to highlight these elements in his upcoming projects.

Infusing a modern twist to traditional scenes, Gwang Gwang’s artwork embodies a unique fusion of the old and the new. A classic example is his illustration of a man performing a traditional mask dance on a double-headed drum, stylishly adorned with a cap, reggae-inspired hair, and sneakers.

With his illustrations visible on a global scale, Gwang Gwang has even contributed to the cover of the first Italian-language book on Korean fairy tales. He’s excited about his role in Hyundai Engineering & Construction’s 2023 branding campaign. Amid his artistic pursuits, the illustrator remains passionate about showcasing diverse aspects of Korean culture through his work.
