AI-created label now supported by search engines

"AI-Created Label"

Search engines are now supporting an “AI-created” label to recognize images altered by or originated from Artificial Intelligence (AI). This marks a step towards increasing the transparency of AI capabilities and promoting honest and reliable web content.

After successful testing, the “AI-created” label will appear on search results to signify the AI-origin of the content. Coupled with this growing influence of AI technology, it’s intended to offer full transparency to users, highlighting when content has been generated through AI mechanisms.

Search Engine Central, a leader in the industry, has backed the new feature, endorsing the tagging of photos manipulated or modified using AI. This step reaffirms their commitment to a streamlined and transparent user experience.

The International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC), a global authority on metadata standards, play a crucial role in this development. The IPTC’s standards oversee the management of important data such as image descriptions, copyright information, and licensing in the metadata set, setting the structure and order of digital information worldwide.

Currently, the metadata protocol includes images artificially manipulated by AI, specifically in processes termed as Inpainting and Outpainting.

Such changes are often so subtle, they become almost undetectable to an average viewer. This blend of machine-generated creativity with the authenticity of the original picture can be used in fields like photography, digital marketing, or entertainment.

An important addition is the new attribute “compositeWithTrainedAlgorithmicMedia”. However, it’s clarified that this attribute doesn’t fall under Schema structured data. It refers to images modified or enhanced using advanced algorithm-based techniques or media. Such advancements in AI image manipulation come with a responsibility of ethical usage to prevent misleading information, making this a topic of intense scrutiny and debate in the tech world.
