Complementing Core Competency Strengthens Growth

It’s not just about your core service, but also about business development and communication to attract interest in your services. For most people, they are horrified to learn they need to become a salesperson too. And for non-techies, the horror is about dealing with undesired technology surprises, and keeping abreast of the latest and greatest software.

To say the least, entrepreneurship is one of the challenging undertakings of all. In order to rise to the top of all the people in your chosen field, there is more to tackle just when you think you have a grasp of what is needed to be successful. As you finally seem to get a handle on the basics of what you need to know, new thought and new ways of conducting business are discovered.

One of the best things you can do for yourself is to get caught up on the “need to know” and then push yourself to tune into the “why” as well as new ideas to be ahead of the curve. This is one key endeavor that will help you to be seen as an expert in your field.

A good way to accomplish this is for you to choose topics that appeal to you most. Then set a budget for getting the help you need with the remaining areas that are necessary but in which you have zero interest. The following questions may be helpful before you go down your next path building business:

– What has been your most successful strategy to date?
– Which venue of all the services offered, do you enjoy the most?
– What knowledge do you lack that could provide a more comprehensive service for your clientele?

Once you come to realize your preferred work, take on the additional task of educating yourself on complementary topics. For example, sales, marketing and public relations overlap in some areas yet are distinct disciplines. By educating yourself on each discipline complementary to your core business, you gain a 360 degree perspective. Additionally, you begin to understand the how and why strategies work well, especially when they are used together.

Once comfortable with this new knowledge a higher level perspective will have been gained. The ability to communicate to a greater variety of subjects will attract wider and larger audiences. This contributes directly to business growth.

A side benefit of all this education is that your personal brand grows and fully blossoms. Suddenly you are aware, more than ever, of your capabilities and are motivated to continue to expand upon them. You grow into becoming your own person. This then translates well into a more powerful branding program. One added step to become a true leader is to teach the best of what you know to those who yet have much to learn.

One other distinct advantage to gaining the wider perspective is that when the economic markets go through their ups and downs, your added knowledge will help stabilize what you have in place. Persevering to make a difference in your business and community will see increased recognition and opportunity contributing to the very Smooth Sale!
